In January, a 52-year-old woman and four others were charged in a federal indictment with subjecting disabled victims in Philadelphia to “subhuman conditions,” beating them, depriving them of food and keeping them in locked basements and closets in order to steal their Social Security disability payments. Federal prosecutors said some of the victims endured the abuse for years.

Attorney General and FBI chief spend $11MILLION flying in luxury jets bought for counter-terrorism missions between 2007 and 2011 | Mail Online
The bulk of the flights - which cost an average of $16,285 - were taken on the FBI's two Gulfstream V jets, though the Citation CE-750 and the de Havilland Dash 8 100 were also used for non-mission travel, according to a Government Accountability Office report released on Thursday.

One section of Lord Hope’s judgment is worth quoting in full:
…where allegations of corruption are widespread they must be taken seriously. So too must an appreciation of what corruption may lead to when it affects the whole system. It may involve simple bribery of judges and court officials, or it may involve interference with the judicial system for political reasons of a much more insidious kind. Unjust convictions may result, just to keep the system going and keep prices up. Everyone whose case comes before the courts of that country where practices of that kind are widespread is at risk of suffering an injustice. Those who are familiar with the system may know how much they need to pay, or what they have to do, to obtain a favourable decision but be quite unable to come up with what is needed to achieve that. Those who are not familiar with it will be at an even greater disadvantage...The stark fact is that systemic corruption in a judicial system affects everyone who is subjected to it. No tribunal that operates within it can be relied upon to be independent and impartial. It is impossible to say that any individual who is returned to such a system will receive that most fundamental of all the rights provided for by article 6 of the Convention, which is the right to a fair trial.- See more at: http://www.fcpablog.com/blog/2013/7/13/uk-supremes-dish-on-judicial-corruption.html#sthash.YySOJaRv.dpuf

The US and Europe are experiencing sluggish growth and persistently high unemployment, which for young people in countries like Spain reaches 50%. In the rich world, the older generation also has failed the young by bequeathing them crushing debts. No politician in the US or Europe should look down complacently on the events unfolding in the streets of Istanbul and São Paulo. It would be a grave mistake to think, "It can't happen here."

The need for judicial reform is dire. Judges have NO incentive to learn the tools of their trade — because they cannot be held accountable for wrongdoing, for not properly carrying out their job even if the wrongdoing is KNOWING or even of it is a result of NEGLIGENCE. As a result, judges decide whatever they want according to their whim. In the best case they have good intentions but are ignorant–they don’t know or understand the laws, and they don’t know or understand the facts (because they don’t have backgrounds in mental health and can’t understand that one party may in fact be mentally ill, that one party may in fact be at fault while the other is a victim. They foolishly believe it takes two to tango–not understanding that when mental illness is involved, the victim has done nothing other than marry the wrong person (often unknowingly) and in any event, the perpetrator should never ever be allowed to be abusive (physically or emotionally)–that’s a choice the perpetrator makes and it’s wrong. With no appropriate skills to make the right decisions, things go awry. That’s the best case. The worst case is judges taking bribes (and if you don’t believe it, google judge Blakely) and judges acting out their biases, jealousies or childhood issues. And they can — they have the power of the gavel to issue any order they want, even if the order is illegal–because if someone doesn’t follow the order, they risk that judge punishing them–putting them in jail, ruining their career, ordering their assets liquidated…

Judiciary exemption from public records law protects probation misconduct
Like the Legislature, the Massachusetts judiciary is exempt from public records laws. It’s a weakness that took center stage when a massive patronage scandal in the state Probation Department was revealed in 2010. The pay-to-play scheme remained well hidden; then Probation Commissioner John O’Brien did not have to release recommendations for jobs or candidate’s test scores so was allegedly able to hire friends and relatives of favored legislators, who voted on his budget, with impunity. Though the Probation Department falls under the state judicial branch, it provided little to no oversight.
